When it comes to boutique hotels in New York City, ModernHaus SoHo continues to be one of the coolest properties in the city thanks to its epic food and beverage menu, elegant rooms and fantastic location. To learn about this great hotel, Wayfarer and HM Editor-in-Chief James Wilkinson sat down with Thor Equities owner and principal Jack Sitt in New York.
Jack, thank you for having us at this fantastic property. What makes Modernhaus one of the funniest and most exciting hotels in SoHo?
I live two blocks from the hotel and am uniquely attuned to the culture of the neighborhood. When opening ModernHaus SoHo, the goal was to create a social gathering place—a one-stop destination for New Yorkers and visitors alike.
When guests arrive, they have so much at their fingertips – 11,000 square feet of outdoor space, dinner prepared by a Michelin-starred chef, coffee in our day lounge, cocktails by the rooftop pool and a variety of wellness classes.
You have amazing views from the rooms…it really is quite a different experience than what some visitors to New York are used to.
With 10 room categories, from studios to standard queens to corner suites, we have something for everyone – your intended length of stay or the purpose of your visit.
All of our rooms throughout the property feature large windows with stunning city views, luxurious guest amenities and an array of vibrant artwork – some even including original pieces by Hans Hartung, Nicolas Party and Kaws.
The crown jewel of the hotel, the Gallery Penthouse, is sure to wow guests with its 1,300 square feet of open floor plan and postcard views of the Manhattan Bridge and Freedom Tower.
Jack, the food and drinks on offer are fantastic. Tell us what’s on the menu.
We have assembled a team including Michelin-starred chef George Mendes and seasoned restaurateur David Rabin to present our signature restaurant, Veranda. Housed in a gorgeous greenhouse-like glass enclosure with a fully retractable roof, it extends to the hotel’s indoor-outdoor nature – ideal for alfresco dining, a rarity in this city.
Jumpin Jacks, our high-end breakfast and cocktail bar, is known to many as the hotel’s living room, offering healthy meals, soups, espressos, macchiatos and lattes. During the lockdown, I became engrossed in coffee culture – studying the science behind the beans and what makes a good cup. It was important to me that we offer the highest quality available. Jumpin Jacks is the only New York Outpost to offer Cometeer Coffee; brand made from premium beans of rare auction beans that you won’t find anywhere else in town.
Finally, Jimmy, the hotel’s rooftop bar, provides panoramic views and one of the city’s few outdoor pools, where guests can enjoy seasonal cocktails and light snacks.
The general idea is to draw our guests into the beauty of each location and keep them coming back for food and drink.
Your rooftop bar, Jimmy, is still one of the hottest spots after many years of trading. Why is it so good?
Jimmy’s has become such a staple of the neighborhood, and with so much new happening at the hotel, it felt right to preserve a bit of the old SoHo soul. When visiting, guests can expect the same core layout that made David Rabin’s place what it is today, but with a new design and refreshed energy including new artwork, furniture and a cutting-edge menu.
There are many great things about the hotel. What do you think the X factor is?
The vision of ModernHaus SoHo was to create a dialogue between industrial architecture and a refined, dynamic interior that allows for intimate moments with the city as its backdrop. The design of the hotel and the use of outdoor space remains the most unique feature of this property.
Inspired by the Bauhaus art movement, the heritage surrounding the neighborhood and Philip Johnson’s Glass House, we introduced color and texture to the interiors, prioritizing space and bringing the outdoors indoors.
