NRLW star Karina Brown details her anger over the Manly pride jersey scandal

NRLW player Karina Brown has described her anger at a boycott of the Manly Sea Eagles pride jersey after seven players refused to wear it.

Brown, who went viral in 2018 after kissing his then-girlfriend Vanessa Foliaki after a State of Origin match, was left “frustrated” by the players’ attitude.

Brown spoke about the scandal on the ‘On Her Game’ podcast when she spoke to host Sam Squiers and revealed she was stunned by the move.

“It turned me on, to be honest. I felt angry and frustrated and then I decided to dig a little deeper and find out the whole story… when I dug deeper I realized it wasn’t even the pride jersey that made it worse.

“This jersey is for everyone in the league… whether you love someone of the same sex or you love Jesus Christ, they say there is a place for you in rugby league.

“Getting upset about a shirt with a few extra colors, on the piping… I was amazed at the attitude some of the players took.

“It’s constantly frustrating.

“Because yes, we are becoming a more awakened society.

“And the next generations are more open-minded and open-hearted.”

“People are realizing that discrimination is so hurtful in society and we are trying to do something about it.

“It’s frustrating that it still exists.”

A photo of Brown and Foliaki kissing after the 2018 State of Origin clash was met with scorn from fans who claimed it was a “bad move” by the NRL. The NRL responded to the comment by saying: “Welcome to 2018… can’t wait for you to join us!”

In the days after the post went viral, Brown spoke about her hopes for the sport that one day a picture like the one above will just be considered normal.

“I think it was good for the world to see that, to show how far we’ve come as a society. But also to show that we still have a long way to go. Not all of the feedback has been positive,” she wrote in a column for Players Voice.

“It’s still a shock to some people. I think the more we get it out there that it’s okay to be who you are, it won’t be a shock anymore. It will just be normal. It is normal.

“I’m looking forward to the day when my moment with Vanessa is just a simple post-match photo. And I think we are not far from that.”

The seven players boycotting the pride jersey went a step further on Wednesday when it was announced they would not take part in Thursday night’s game against the Sydney Roosters.

Male officials excused the players from taking part after speaking to the players and the club’s security service provider.

Former NRL star Jordan Kahu has shunned the stance of seven Manly players and condemned them for their actions in a move that could impact the next generation.

Kahu’s scathing criticism comes on the heels of Sydney Roosters coach Trent Robinson launching a boycott.
