Kickstarter game busts crypto gambling, can’t refund backers

In 2021, at the height of the world’s collective blockchain frenzy, video game called Untamed Isles — Pokemon, but with crypto stuffraised over $500,000 on Kickstarter. A year later, the game is practically dead and so broken that it can’t even refund its backers.

in post on the game’s Steam pagethe developers said “we have to pause development of Untamed Isles and put the project on hold” which only sounds temporary until you read the rest of what they have to say:

There are countless factors that have led to this moment, but it all boils down to us not being able to financially keep up with the demands of what we set out to do.

Untamed Isles is a very ambitious open world monster catching title. We brought more than 70 employees to work on this project and worked hard for more than 2 years to create the game we all dreamed of. The truth is that development costs are high and there have been many obstacles on our way to this point. Since we started the journey in 2020, the economic landscape has changed dramatically both in general and for cryptocurrencies specifically, and we are not sure about the current market. We have run out of funds and cannot continue development at this time.

When they say “the economic landscape has changed dramatically,” what they mean is “the ass fell out of the crypto marketwhich we bet your money on”:

We leaned on the crypto market and expanded rapidly on the back of positive interest. When the crash happened we ended up badly exposed with too short a runway. Game remains game first, crypto second in design, but crypto funds have become and remain critical to getting us to release. Unlike many projects that go down in the storm, we actually have a great game design that could stand on its own two feet. But until the crypto situation is resolved – and we’re sure it will be at some stage – then we have to hibernate the development of this project.

And that ass fell so far that say the developers in a separate post “Since our cash reserves are empty, we are unable to refund our original sponsors. We are truly sorry and wish this scenario had been different.”

While this might be the part of the story where I say that everyone who supports this game got exactly what they deserved, the fact is that Untamed Island the cryptographic elements were optional, and it’s clear from the backers’ feedback under the Kickstarter “pause” announcement that many people were only interested in the game itself, not its speculative elements:

Untamed Island “Hiatus” is particularly odd it was only two weeks ago that the team confirmed a launch date of October 6, 2022, and that one of their key promises at the time of the Kickstarter campaign was that “We’re lucky to have the funding to safely deliver core features and gameplay”.
