‘He doesn’t want to play under Anthony Griffin’: Dragons refuse to release young gun

Young Dragons marksman Tyrell Sloan will not be released by the club “no matter what”, despite the full-back reportedly no longer wanting to play under coach Anthony Griffin.

Sloan entered this season with high expectations, but played just eight games and half of those were from the 20th round onwards.

The 20-year-old is unwilling to sit behind Cody Ramsey in the pecking order and a number of rival clubs are monitoring the situation.

Sloan is frustrated under Griffin and believes he will get more minutes elsewhere, according to veteran reporter Dave Riccio.

“The most pressing situation for the St George Illawarra Dragons is the potential release of Tyrell Sloan, their young gun fullback who is campaigning for a release,” Riccio told NRL 360.

“I understand it was not requested earlier. I can tell you that I believe it will be rejected no matter what.”

NRL 360 host Braith Anasta asked why Sloan wanted to leave the club.

“Because he doesn’t want to play under Anthony Griffin. He doesn’t believe that he is taking the right path and that he has a future there,” said Riccio.

“I believe the leadership of St George Illawarra, as we’ve already seen, we don’t have any clarity from the Saints on what they’re going to do in 2024.

“All we know is next year and I fear they’re going the way of the Michael Maguire situation we saw at Wests Tigers where they’re dancing about giving the coach so many weeks and rounds to hit the ground running. when in the end it just creates uncertainty and conjecture about the future of the players.

“Sloan isn’t the only player questioning where he’s going after 2023 and I think the Saints need to make a call.”

NRL 360 host Paul Kent said Sloan should tough it out at the Dragons, while Riccio also revealed the club don’t have the money for Titans star David Fifita.

“How about going out and doing crack?” Kent said.

“The coach chooses the best player. Anthony Griffin won’t leave a better player on the bench.

“Unfortunately, the way the game is going these days, the coach is constantly trying to prove to the players that he is doing well. The players don’t have to prove themselves to the coach anymore, the players get shit and say ‘you know what I’m from here’.”

Wayne Bennett’s Dolphins are reportedly eyeing the signing of Sloan and Jamayne Isaako their current option to play at fullback.
